An introduction to AHUS

Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrom (aHUS) is a disease due to a disorder in complement alternative pathway regulation. A very rare progressive disease condition, usually with a genetic component and often caused by chronic, uncontrolled activation of the complement system. The complement syste is a branch of the immune system that destroys and remove foreign particles in the body. The disease is characterized by the formation of blood clots in small blood vessels throughout the body, and this can lead to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, and death.

It is not a very well understood disease condition and is often prone to misdiagnosis. A second opinion is always a great idea when diagnosed with aHUS.
