The International classification of diseases is a comprehensive index of disease conditions. The following is a direct quote from the US CDC website:
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the classification used to code and classify mortality data from death certificates.

The International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification is used to code and classify morbidity data from the inpatient and outpatient records, physician offices, and most National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys.

ICD codes are the foundation for medical billing. There is a growing movement to increase medical billing transparency to patients, and because of this it will become increasingly more important to have some familiarity with these codes. The Good news is that they are quite easy to read, although medical bills are still quite opaque because they are set up for insurance and payer groups, and not so much for patient consumption.
